Troubleshooting common hearing aid problems at home

If the volume isn’t loud enough, check the volume control. If you have a manual volume control, it might have been turned down by accident. Next, check the receiver tube for wax, debris or water. Make sure there is no wax covering the microphone.

If the sound is distorted, your batteries might be weak. Remove the old batteries and inspect the battery contacts for corrosion or debris. If the contacts are soiled, gently clean them with a cotton swab and a drop of vinegar. Completely dry battery contacts, then install fresh batteries and firmly close the battery door. Also, check to make sure you didn’t set the device to telecoil by accident.

If the hearing aid is completely dead, make sure the device is in the “on” position. This fixes many dead hearing aids as they are turned off by accident. If this doesn’t revive your device, remove the batteries and replace them with fresh batteries.

Whistling and feedback may be caused by excessive wax build-up. Clean your ears and your hearing aids of any wax. If these troubleshooting steps do not solve your problem, bring your hearing aids to New Hartford Hearing Center.

Hearing aid repairs

Every hearing aid sold by New Hartford Hearing Center is backed by a manufacturer’s warranty. Even if that initial warranty has expired, we may be able to repair your devices for a small fee. When you bring your hearing aids in, we will diagnose the problem, provide you an estimate of the cost of repair and advise if it is better to repair or replace the devices. Depending on the hearing aid manufacturer, some repairs may be backed by a new one-year warranty.
